He is a true inspiration to many people, not only because he is a world renown Christian evangelist, but because he has managed to overcome the challenge of being born with no arms or legs.
Nick Vujicic exudes wholeheartedness, embodies gratitude and he exemplifies goodness in human beings.
Nick Vujicic’s miracle birth
The man with no limbs was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1982. A rare disorder called tetra-amelia syndrome is the reason Nick Vujicic was born without legs and arms. This rare disorder can affect other parts of the body, causing malformations of the skull, heart, nervous system, face and skeleton. It can also affect the lungs, making it hard to breathe. Most babies that have the disorder are either stillborn, or they die shortly after their birth.
“I know for certain that God does not make mistakes, but he does make miracles. I am one. You are, too.”
Learning to focus on life
Even though he had the support of his parents, his brother and sister and a faith in God, Vujicic grew depressed as a child and tried to drown himself in a bathtub at the age of 10. He made two attempts before realizing he didn’t want to burden his family with the suicide. Although he is a man without limbs, he has a foot that he uses for typing, writing and swimming. When he hurt his foot at 13-years-old, he realized he had to be more focused on his abilities instead of his disabilities.
“This life is full of great experiences if we only give it a shot.”
Nick’s public speaking career
Nick Vujicic started his career as a public speaker at the age of 17 when he started speaking to small groups about his faith in God. The biggest audience he had at the time, 300 high school sophomores, made him see how he could affect people and teach them about his faith. During his speech, much of the audience struggled not to cry, and one girl asked to hug him. She told him that no one had ever told her how loved she was or that she was a beautiful person.
“Bullies want to abuse you. Instead of allowing that, you can use them as your personal motivators. Power up and let the bully eat your dust.”
That speech inspired him to continue public speaking, and he went on to visit 44 countries and speak over 2,000 times. He has also founded his company called “Attitude is Altitude” and he started a non-profit ministry called “Life Without Limbs.” His ministry allows him to go around the world to talk about his faith and hope.
“I really forget that I have no arms or legs sometimes.”
Nick Vujicic is married Kanae Miyahara in 2012 and their perfectly healthy son, Kiyoshi James Vujicic, was born one year and one day later.
Vujicic spreads his message through his public speaking, TV and in his own books.
